Checking In … The Principal, York, England November, 2018

Situated near the York Train Station, this grand hotel built in 1878, stands as a testament to its royal origins. Tall ceilings and a grand reception hall welcome the weary traveler and invite them to unwind in its luxurious surroundings. A true resort, you can dine in two restaurants, enjoy a drink at the bar, or relax in the spa and spend some time by the pool.

I recently booked a three-night stay in November in one of their sidings rooms. These rooms are in an annex of the hotel, a little walk from the main building. As I was traveling from overseas, I emailed the hotel a few weeks beforehand to request a quiet room so I could get a good nights sleep. The hotel is known for booking corporate events and weddings. A weekend in November also brings several visitors to view York’s Christmas festival so this popular hotel is always booked. I signed up for their rewards program and was able to save 10% off the room rate. When I arrived, the front desk staff were warm and welcoming, happy to answer any questions and give me a layout of the hotel. They also noted my membership in the rewards program and upgraded my room to a double bed within the main hotel. The room was immaculate and beautifully designed giving me the quiet escape I desired. A lovely handwritten note was left on the table to welcome me to the hotel along with a homemade brownie and shortbread. I enjoyed these delicious treats with some tea that was provided in the free tuck box.

The biggest item on my checklist is a comfortable bed and pillows. The only negative to my stay was the very firm bed, which was uncomfortable for me to sleep on. I ended up laying on top of the soft duvet to pad the mattress. If only the bed had been softer, this would have been a 5-star review. The bathroom was modern with a waterfall shower head and heated towel rack. The Elemis toiletries were perfect.

The hotel was magnificent, the staff was amazing, but the bed is a major concern for me and I don’t know if I’d return to this luxury hotel again knowing I won’t get a good nights sleep.
